Travel Ambassadors
Our Travel Ambassadors are a dedicated group of pupils from Years 4 and 5 who represent the school in developing and promoting our School Travel Plan. They take an active role in making journeys to and from school healthier, safer and more environmentally friendly.
The Travel Ambassadors attend conferences and meetings, complete surveys and work closely with the local council to help shape our travel goals. They gather ideas and feedback from pupils across the school and help set targets focused on increasing the number of children travelling actively—whether by walking, cycling or scooting. They also work hard to ensure our journeys to school are as safe as possible.
As part of their role, the team produces a termly newsletter for parents and carers, sharing updates on their work and offering practical ways families can support active and safe travel. We are proud to be working in partnership with Greenwich Council on our School Travel Plan, as well as contributing towards the TFL (Transport for London) Travel for Life accreditation.
Our targets this year include:
- Increasing the number of children travelling actively to school
- Reducing the number of children driven to school, encouraging “park and stride” where driving is necessary
- Cutting down on illegal parking, particularly on double yellow lines
- Reducing engine idling near the school to improve air quality
- Ensuring all children understand how to cross the road safely
Whole school involvement
Travel and road safety are a whole-school priority. Every class takes part in activities such as road safety workshops, walk-to-school challenges and creative projects, including designing 20mph posters and helmet awareness campaigns.
All pupils participate in the WOW (Walk Once a Week) challenge—although we encourage everyone to travel actively at least twice a week. Children track their journeys in class and receive a badge each month if they achieve this goal.
Older pupils also benefit from practical skills sessions, with Year 6 taking part in “Fix Your Bike” workshops and Bikeability training to help them ride confidently and safely on the road.
Together, our Travel Ambassadors and wider school community are making a real difference in creating safer, healthier and greener journeys for everyone.
