School Council

Our School Council is made up of representatives from Year 2 to Year 6, led by Mrs Wollaston. They meet regularly to discuss improvements to the school community and fund-raising projects. Representatives report back to their classes and pass on the views of their class at subsequent meetings.

2022-23

School councillors have been busy so far this year organising fundraising events for both national and local charities.

The children have organised a 'Wear Something Spotty Day' in support of Children in Need which raised £372.

They also held a whole school vote, to decide which charity they wanted to support in the lead up to Christmas. Children across the school overwhelmimg voted to support Demelza Hospice Care, with all donations collected at the Christmas productions going directly to the charity based here in Eltham

Currently, the children are developing ideas to brighten up the school by working with Mrs Catt and the gardening club, to create wellington boot flower planters. We are also hoping to pay a visit to the local council later in the year to see democracy in action.

ECO COUNCIL

Our Eco-Council has representatives from Year 1 to Year 6, and  we meet regularly to work on our action plan and discuss our ongoing projects.

Last year we worked towards, and received, our Green Flag award with Merit, which means  Deansfield is now classed as an Eco School! This year we will be reapplying for our Green Flag award, building on projects we started last academic year, and beginning new ones.

We chose our 3 Action Plan topics from the Eco Schools list of ten topics – Litter, Marine, Global Citizenship, Waste, Transport, Healthy Living, Water, Energy, Biodiversity and School Grounds. For the academic year 2022-2023 the Eco Council have decided to focus on: Marine, School Grounds and Biodiversity.

Last year we installed compost bins, planted insect friendly flowers, hung bird feeders, made insect hotels and completed litter picks.  We also enjoyed workshops from Born Free, a charity who fundraise for, and work with endangered animals. This year we are hoping to reduce plastic waste in our lunches, plant more wildflowers and insect friendly plants in the school grounds, and increase our bird and insect visitors!

The Eco-Council are very fortunate to be working with the Eltham Enviros, a team of parents dedicated to making the local area a more eco-friendly place. They fundraise to help us with our projects, and they give us lots of advice!

Look out for Deansfield’s eco projects on Instagram and in the newsletter!
